race day

So our new ward has an annual "Dog and Rod." Anyone can build and enter a pinewood derby car in either the standard or unlimited divisions. Kaleb, Brody and Mia all wanted to enter cars. They drew out what they wanted and I went to work. Brody and Kaleb did the finish work on their cars, while Emmi helped Mia with hers. While we weren't the fastest cars out there, we were far from the slowest.

Here are the three cars... Shamu (Mia), Riptide (Kaleb), and Hammerhead (Brody).

Kaleb's car Riptide was inspired by Percy Jackson's sword in the novels and upcoming movie. The back are three waves, while the front is the tip of a sword. I did him a disservice by putting all the weight in the back of the car, the front was so light it hopped as it went down the track.

Hammerhead was Brody's creation. He wanted an anchor on its head, but a fish hook was easier to come by and a great way to hold the needed weight. His car received the "Most Creative" award.

Shamu was Mia's creation. Her car ran the fastest of our families car. We probably received the most comments about it also. I'm not sure if it was the car or the cute little girl skipping up to the track to deliver her car for the races.

It was a lot of fun and the kids were in great spirits, even after the racing ended. The cars took some time cutting out but it was well worth it. The cub scouts have their race coming up in a month and he drew out his next car for me to shape. I should scan it in for you to see. It is basically a blue angel (F-18) body with a couple missiles hanging on the sides. Time will tell how it ends up.
